Social media is somewhat of a debatable topic. Is it right for you, or is it driving us to be more lonely than ever? For me, I never really understood why Snapchat, the popular photo-based social network, took off as the whole model seems elementary.
Going back, the first real one was MySpace, where you’d be able to customize your page, even with a music soundtrack, and have friends write on your page with comments. Today, Facebook reigns supreme with a massive amount of users and revenue. Has Social media peaked? One app is a different, and perhaps classic take on Social apps that enables you to chat with a group of like-minded individuals on your own time. Yes, chat, as in voice and text. This free app is called Discord.
Just What Exactly is Discord?
Before we get into what the app does, you should know that one of the app’s primary market is gamers. Because you can have the Discord app loaded on your iOS, Android, Mac, or PC devices at once you can play games, chat with friends, and have no hiccups along the way. Discord figures, you can tackle killing giant monsters and dragons with your friends and talk to them together and have even more fun using their app.
One of the biggest competitors in this space was Teamspeak, which was similar but didn’t have the options that Discord now has.
How Discord Works
- Join or Make a Chat Room (Called Discord Servers)
- Create Categories without a Chat Room
- Have Friends Join the Chat Room
- Push to Talk or Chat Whenever You’d Like
While we do call them Chat Rooms, Discord relabels themDiscord Servers, probably because it would be too cliche to name them Chat rooms as that has a reputation of being an ancient term.
Discord, unlike Teamspeak, has the ability to venture into other social spaces without any limits! Just because the app is geared towards gamers, doesn’t mean you have to game to use it!
Cool Server Ideas for Discord
- Family Reunion
- Motivational Groups
- Workplace Chat
- Theme Park Chat
You can choose to create your Discord Server or join an existing Server. There are a few websites that have a list of these servers like:
How Does Discord Make Money?
Discord makes money through it’s Nitro program. The company believes in the app being free and without ads. Should you want to contribute through the Nitro program, you’ll also get access to over 1000 games including Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, and Metro Last Light.
Why is Gaming So Big Right Now?
Gaming seems to be generating a ton of money and interest these days. There have even been cases of Fortnite (a popular game) addiction and other social issues. While you can argue games are bad for you, in terms of violence or overall brain development, gaming has been around for decades now and it will probably trend upward for more decades to come.
Games have evolved into a more social environment starting first with World of Warcraft, and now expanding to more socially accepted games including Fortnite, Minecraft, and more. In other words, you can be a nerd, a princess, a jock, and still keep your social status intact if you play games!
What Are Gaming Influencers?
I know as a kid growing up in the 90’s gamers weren’t known as social butterflies, but these days you might call Markiplier and Pewdiepie the most social people on the planet, with millions of followers and devoted fans.
What is a Gaming Influencer exactly? These people play video games and release unique color commentary while playing them. You could say they are just another form of a comedian or social influencer, but I’m not sure. In fact, I’m not sure these types of influencers will be a trend that lasts forever, but as of now, the top influencers in the gaming world make highly respectable cash!
Want to Become an Influencer? Not So Fast
It’s possible to become a gaming influencer without much work involved. Remember, it’s basically a color commentary on your gaming habits. Markiplier got his fame by playing scary games and being over dramatic about jump scares.
In order to become an influencer, you’ll need to devote yourself to a personality that will attract fans. It’s a lot of work, and for most of these social influencers that do make money:It’s not a 9-5 job, it’s a 24 hour 6 days a week job.
