Writing/selling eBooks is a great way to generate passive income. Today, almost anyone can be a self-published author.  I started my erotica publishing business after reading a blog post about another author. Writing erotica is excellent because it requires almost no writing skill. You can be successful without spending money marketing and be promoting your books. Plus the startup costs are meager!

Where To Publish Erotica

A lot of people think publishing your eBooks is impossible. However, it has never been easier with advancements in technology.

Right now, there are many platforms for authors to publish erotica (and other eBooks). These include (1) Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), (2) Barnes & Noble’s Nook Press platform, and (3) Smash Words.

Out of all the platforms, Amazon KDP has the best royalty structure.

Amazon KDP

  • 35% royalty option (books must be priced between $0.99 and $200.00)
  • 70% royalty option (books must be priced between $2.99 and $9.99)

Nook Press

  • 40% ($0.99 to $2.98)
  • 65% ($2.99 to $9.99)
  • 40% ($10.00 to $199.99)

Smash Words

  • 45% to 85% depending on a variety of factors such as affiliate marketing, end-user device, etc.

Right now, I publish exclusively on Amazon KDP because they are the dominant eBook seller in the US.

How To Write Erotica

Some of you may be wondering how actually to write erotica. Don’t worry; it takes almost no writing skill at all!  And sure it’s a bit out there in terms of category, but it’s a niche worth exploring since there is demand.  It beat’s making money as a Phone Sex Operator!

Here is a quick four-step process to get started:

1. Discover A Profitable Niche

Writing erotica is all about finding the right niches. These can be gay prison stories, lesbian stories, or even BDSM stories.

Not every niche you write in will be successful. It is a good idea to research other successful authors.

Take notes on:

  • How their stories are structured,
  • How they format the book,
  • What their book description is like, and
  • The book cover design.

Once you get an idea of why the authors in this niche are successful, you can begin writing. It may take some experimenting around to find the right niche for you.

2. Begin Writing!

Once you discover a profitable niche, it is time to get writing! For beginners, I recommend writing stories around 2,500 to 4,000 words long. I like my stories to be structured into three parts:

First, the story should introduce the main characters. Describe their gender, how they look, the location of the story, and most importantly character motivation.

Second, build desire and some conflict. Maybe the conflict is an office policy that doesn’t allow employee dating or perhaps it’s something like the moral dilemma of sleeping with your boss to get a promotion. The point is to hook the reader in with some exciting problem.

Finally, resolve the conflict/desire and consummate sex.

3. Design A Cover

A good book cover will do wonders for your book. I would highly recommend using PicMonkey to design a cover. All you need to do is upload a stock photo and use the easy-to-use software to develop a professional looking cover.

Alternatively, you can pay someone on Fiverr $5 – $20 to design a professional cover for you.

4. Book Description

This is where you write the description to sell your book. Be mysterious! Don’t give away the whole story, but give enough to hook readers in.

How Much Money Can I Make?

Making money writing erotica depends on some factors like the quality of your cover, the size of your niche, story quality, and much more. However, the number one factor is book volume. The more you publish, the more successful you will be.

The key to generating a $1,000+ a month income source from publishing erotica is consistency. It is much better to publish one book a week for four weeks than release four in one week and take a month off. You have to get a publishing schedule and stick to it no matter what.

In my first month, I published nine stories and made $190. Today (~18 months later), I make $1,700+ monthly passive income from my books!
